aishwariya rai Bachchan[1] (née Aishwarya rai,Tulu: ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಾ ರೈ; born 1 November 1973) is an Indian actress and former Miss World. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model and gained fame after winning the Miss World title in 1994. During her career, aishwariya rai has acted in over 40 movies in Hindi, English, Tamil and Bengali, which include a number of international productions.
aiswariya rai is one of the most beautiful indian heriones.
Often cited by the media as the most beautiful woman in the world,[2][3][4] aishwariya rai made her movie debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar (1997) and had her first commercial success in the Tamil movie Jeans (1998). She came to the attention of Bollywood in the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Her performance in the film won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 2002 she appeared in Bhansali's next project, Devdas (2002), for which she won her second Filmfare Best Actress Award.
After a low phase in her career during 2003–2005, she appeared in the blockbuster Dhoom 2 (2006), which turned out to be her biggest Bollywood commercial success. She later appeared in films like Guru (2007), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and Enthiran (2010) which were commercially and critically successful. aishwariya rai has thus established herself as one of the leading contemporary actresses in the Indian film industry.
aishwariya rai was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj aishwariya rai and Vrinda aishwariya rai. She has one elder brother, Aditya aishwariya rai, who is an engineer in the merchant navy and has also co-produced one of aishwariya rai's movies, Dil Ka Rishta (2003). At an early age her parents moved to Mumbai where she attended the Arya Vidya Mandir high school in Santa Cruz. aishwariya rai then entered Jai Hind College at Churchgate for one year, and then moved to Ruparel College in Matunga to finish her HSC studies. She planned to become an architect, and started studying architecture, but gave up her education to pursue a career in modelling.[5]
She can communicate in several languages, including her mother tongue Tulu,[6] as well as Hindi, English, Marathi and Tamil
While pursuing her studies in architecture, aishwariya rai began modelling on the side. In the 1994 Miss India contest, she won the second place behind Sushmita Sen, and was crowned Miss India World. She went on to win the Miss World title the same year, where she also won the Miss Photogenic award. She abandoned her academic education after winning the pageant and spent one year reigning as Miss World in London. aishwariya rai then started working as a professional model and then moved on to her current profession as an actress.
Early career (1997–1998)
aishwariya rai made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil biopic film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal,[8] The controversial film was a critical success and won many awards including Best Film award at the Belgrade International Film Festival, two National Film Awards, and two Filmfare Awards South. aishwariya rai appeared in dual roles, opposite veteran actor Mohanlal, with one of her roles being a cinematic depiction of political leader and ex-actress J. Jayalalithaa.[9] aishwariya rai made her Bollywood debut in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya opposite Bobby Deol, which also released that year; the film did not do well at the box office,[10] and was also panned by critics. However, her third project, S. Shankar's Tamil film, Jeans (1998) was a commercial success. The film was also noted for the song "Poovukkul", written by Vairamuthu, in the lyrics of which, she is compared to the seven wonders of the world and described as the eighth.[11][12]
Success (1999–2002)
In 1999 aishwariya rai starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. The film was centered on aishwariya rai's character, Nandini, who is forced to marry Devgan's character despite being in love with another man (Khan). As her husband tries to get her to her previous love, she eventually falls for him. aishwariya rai's portrayal won her critical acclaim, with a review on Rediff.com writing, "Aishwarya looks beautiful as usual ... This film will most likely draw her accolades from all over, maybe even get her recognised as an actress the way Manisha Koirala did in Khamoshi. In many scenes, there is no trace of makeup and she looks very fresh".[13] The film became her first box office success in Bollywood and earned her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for her.
In the same year she appeared in Subhash Ghai's Taal, in which she played the role of a young village woman, Mansi, who becomes a big pop star after being hurt by her lover played by Akshay Khanna. The film was an average performer in India but was a big success among the international audience, especially in the United States, where it became the first Indian film to reach the top 20 on Variety's box office list.[14] Her performance in the film was paishwariya raised with Rediff.com writing, "After being paishwariya raised for her looks and acting talent in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Aishwarya has excelled in Taal. She looks ethereal and unlike the former film, has a very sober and soft role. Though she looks pained and tragic in most of the film, she does a good job of a woman who is very protective of her father and one who doesn't think twice before rejecting a lover who has insulted her father."[15] She received another Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare for her performance in the film.[16]
In 2000, she appeared in Mansoor Khan's Josh alongside Shahrukh Khan and Chandrachur Singh, in which she played a Catholic named Shirley who falls in love with the sibling of her brother's enemy. The film was a commercial success. Later that year she appeared in Satish Kaushik's Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai opposite Anil Kapoor. It was a moderate success and her performance earned her a Filmfare Best Actress Award nomination. Later that year she played a supporting role in Aditya Chopra's Mohabbatein alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. The film was a major commercial success and became the second-highest grosser of the year, and it earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award nomination. Later that year, she starred in the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain, alongside Mammooty, Ajith Kumar and Tabu.
In 2002, aishwariya rai appeared alongside Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's famous novel by the same name. She played the role of Paro (Parvati), the love interest of the protagonist, played by Khan. The film received a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.[17] It became the highest-grossing film of the year in both India and overseas, earning a revenue of Rs 390 million domestically.[18][19] Devdas won numerous awards, including 10 Filmfare Awards, and aishwariya rai received her second Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance
In 2003, she acted in Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film Chokher Bali, an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's novel by the same name. She portrayed the character of a young woman called Binodini, who is left to her own devices when her sickly husband dies soon after they are married.[20] That year she appeared in her home production Dil Ka Rishta with Arjun Rampal and Rohan Sippy's Kuch Na Kaho alongside Abhishek Bachchan, neither of which fared well at the box office.
In 2004 she appeared in Gurinder Chadha's Bollywood-style English adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Bride and Prejudice alongside Martin Henderson. She played the role of Lalita Bakshi, the film's counterpart of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen's novel. This was followed by Rajkumar Santoshi's Khakee with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan and Jayapradha; in the film she played a negative role for the first time in her career. In the same year she appeared in her second film with Rituparno Ghosh, aishwariya raincoat alongside Ajay Devgan. The film was highly acclaimed by the critics, with aishwariya rai receiving rave reviews for her performance.[21]
In 2005 she appeared in Shabd, a film based on a love triangle, alongside Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan. The film was a box office flop; it received average reviews from the critics. Her next release that year was Paul Mayeda Berges's The Mistress of Spices based on the novel The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, in which she starred alongside Dylan McDermott. The film received negative reviews from critics and was also a commercial failure. The same year she made a special appearance in Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli in a hugely popular seven-minute dance sequence for the song "Kajra Re", with Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.
In 2006, aishwariya rai starred in J P Dutta's Umrao Jaan, a second film adaptation of the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada (1905), written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. She portrayed courtesan and poetess by the same name from 19th century Lucknow. The film was a critical and commercial failure, though aishwariya rai's work was generally well received. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote, "aishwariya railooks ethereal. She has looked heavenly and performed so convincingly. She emotes through her expressive eyes and the consistency in her performance is evident from start to end".[22] Later that year she appeared as a master thief, Sunheri, in Yash Raj Films's Dhoom 2 directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, with an ensemble cast of Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra. The film turned out to be a blockbuster and became the highest grossing film of the year in India, earning revenues of over Rs 770 million domestically.[23] The film also sparked a controversy for a scene containing a kiss between her and Hrithik Roshan.[24] However, aishwariya rai's performance in the film received mostly negative reviews with a reviewer on Rediff.com writing, "Ash's character too is all gloss and no depth. You seldom feel any tension in her behaviour and expressions as she accompanies the master thief on potentially dangerous missions. Sunehri enters the film nearly 50 minutes after its opening in a disguise. In no time, she is wearing the flimsiest of clothes. Once she opens her mouth—and she does it two minutes after appearing in the film—she spoils the image. There is no sensuality anymore, and half an hour later, one wonders what made the master thief fall for her."[25] Nonetheless, her performance earned her a sixth nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award.
In 2007 she appeared in Mani Ratnam's Guru as Sujata. Speculated to be based on the life of Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, it was a rag to riches story about an ambitious small town man who ends up as the owner of the biggest corporation in India. The film was premièred at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, Canada, making it the first Indian film to have a mainstream international premiere in Canada.[26][27] The film was critically acclaimed and performed well at the box office.[28] Critical reception for aishwariya rai was mixed. While Nikhat Kazmi from The Times of India wrote that she is "just okay and fails to register the growth in her character", Rediff.com's Raja Sen described it as "arguably her finest performance, visible especially when she takes over the film's climax."[29][30] aishwariya rai got her seventh Filmfare nomination for Best Actress for the role. In the same year she starred in Jag Mundhra's British film Provoked as Kiranjit Ahluwalia (an NRI woman who killed her abusive husband after facing severe domestic violence) alongside Naveen Andrews. The film was panned by critics and was also a commercial failure, though aishwariya rai received positive reviews from critics. In the same year she appeared as a female Indian warrior from Kerala named Mira in Doug Lefler's epic film The Last Legion alongside Sir Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth and Thomas Sangster. The film was a critical failure
In 2008, she starred alongside Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker's historical drama Jodhaa Akbar, a partly fictionalised account of the life of Muslim Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, played by Roshan and his Hindu wife Jodha Bai, played by aishwariya rai. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning revenues of over Rs 590 million domestically. aishwariya rai's performance in the film was paishwariya raised by critics, with Rajeev Masand writing, "aishwariya raiis wonderfully restaishwariya rained and uses her eyes expertly to communicate so much, making this one of her finest outings on screen".[32] She earned her eighth nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare for her performance. Later that year she co-starred with husband Abhishek Bachchan and father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan in Ram Gopal Verma's Sarkar Raj, a sequel to his previous film Sarkar. She played the CEO of a major power company proposing to establish a new power plant in rural Maharashtra.
In 2009 she appeared in Harald Zwart's spy comedy film The Pink Panther 2 playing the role of criminology expert, Sonia Solandres. Like its predecessor, the sequel received negative reviews from critics and did a moderate business of $75,871,032 worldwide.[33] In 2010, she collaborated with Mani Ratnam for a bilingual, with both versions featuring aishwariya rai portraying a character based on the goddess Sita. Both films were shot simultaneously, with aishwariya rai's role being one of the only roles which were played by the same performer in both versions.[34] Though her portrayal of Ragini in both languages were paishwariya raised, the Hindi Raavan alongside Abhishek Bachchan failed commercially, whilst the Tamil Raavanan, became a massive success.
On October 1, 2010, she appeared with Rajinikanth in the Tamil film Enthiran, directed by S. Shankar.[35] which has become the biggest blockbuster in India ever.[36] She will also appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish opposite Hrithik Roshan,[37] Vipul Shah's Action Replay opposite Akshay Kumar, Abhinay Deo's next film produced by Farhan Akhtar and Vishal Bharadwaj's next directorial venture.[38]
In 2009 aishwariya rai was awarded the Padma Shri for her contributions to Indian cinema.[39] In the same year she refused to accept the second-highest Order Of France, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as her father was suffering from serious illness, and she wanted her whole family to attend the award function.[40] She is only the fourth Indian actor after Amitabh Bachchan, Nandita Das and Shahrukh Khan to be chosen for an Order Of France.[41] In June 2009, she was declared the Female Star of The Decade at the tenth International Indian Film Academy Awards held in Macau.
In 1999 aishwariya rai participated in a world tour called the Magnificent Five along with Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Akshaye Khanna and Twinkle Khanna.[42] In 2003 she became the first Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.[43]
aishwariya rai is the brand ambassador for The Eye Bank Association of India's nationwide campaign to promote eye donation in India.[44]
In 2004 she travelled to Siachen Glacier, which at a height of 13,000 ft is the highest battlefield in the world, to boost the morale of the jawans for a special New Year episode on the NDTV show, Jai Jawan.[45] In 2005, she became a brand ambassador for Pulse Polio, a campaign established by the Government of India in 1994 to eradicate polio in India.[46]

The school will be made by her family and is going to be named after her.[48]
She appeared along with various other Bollywood actors at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.[49]
In summer 2008, aishwariya rai joined her husband and father-in-law along with Preity Zinta and Ritesh Deshmukh on the Unforgettable World Tour. The first leg of the tour covered the US, Canada, London, and Trinidad. The second leg of the tour most likely happened by the end of the year 2008. Amitabh's company AB Corp Ltd. along with Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd are behind the concert.[50]
Aishwarya is Hindu and deeply religious. Her favourite temple is a 200-year-old Lord Ganesha Temple.[51]
In 1999 Aishwarya began dating Bollywood actor Salman Khan; their relationship was often reported in the media until the couple separated in 2001. aishwariya rai cited "abuse (verbal, physical and emotional), infidelity and indignity" on the part of Khan as a reason for ending their relationship.[52] However, in a 2009 Times of India article titled "Salman didn't hit Ash!" Khan denied ever beating her: "It's not true that I hit a woman."[53]
aishwariya rai is married to actor Abhishek Bachchan. After much speculation concerning their relationship, their engagement was announced on 14 January 2007. The announcement was later confirmed by his father, Amitabh Bachchan.[54] The couple got married on 20 April 2007 according to traditional Hindu rites of the Bunt community to which she belongs. Token North Indian and Bengali ceremonies were also performed. The wedding took place in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence "Prateeksha" in Juhu, Mumbai. Though the wedding was a private affair intended for the Bachchan and aishwariya rai families and friends, the involvement of the media turned it into a national extravaganza. They have been cited as a supercouple in the Indian media.[55][56] aishwariya rai has been very close to her family and lived with them in Bandra, Mumbai, until her marriage.[57][58]
aishwariya rai has been the most popular face of Indian cinema globally. In 2004 she was chosen by Time magazine as one of the World's "100 Most Influential People",[59] and appeared on the cover of Time magazine, Asia Edition in 2003.[60] In October 2004 a wax figure of aishwariya rai was put on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum.[61] She was the sixth Indian and the second Bollywood personality after her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan to get this honour.
She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on 2 January 2005, which said that "at least according to thousands of Web sites, Internet polls and even Julia Roberts", she was "The World's Most Beautiful Woman".[2] In that same year she became a global brand ambassador of L'Oreal alongside Andie Macdowell, Eva Longoria and Penelope Cruz. In 2005, Harpers and Queen's list of 10 Most beautiful women in the world ranked her at the ninth spot.[63] In 2009 she made an appearance on Martha Stewart's show Martha.[64] The same year she also appeared on The Tyra Banks Show hosted by Tyra Banks.[65]

Kareena kapoor (Hindi: करीना कपूर, pronounced [kəˈrina kəˈpoʊr]; born on September 21, 1980),[1] often informally referred to as Bebo,[2][3] is an Indian actress who appears in Bollywood films. During her career, kareena kapoor has received five Filmfare Awards[4] and has been noted for her performances in a range of film genres; these include her work from contemporary romantic dramas to comedies, period films to major Bollywood productions, as well as less publicised independent films.[5][6]
Born into a family where both her parents, Randhir kapoor and Babita, and her elder sister Karisma were actors, kareena kapoor faced the media spotlight from a very young age, but did not make her acting debut until the 2000 film Refugee. Her melodrama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... became India's highest-grossing film in the overseas market in 2001, and is one of her biggest commercial successes to date.[7] After receiving negative reviews for a series of repetitive roles, kareena kapoor accepted more demanding parts in order to avoid being typecast,[8] and was consequently recognized by critics for displaying greater versatility as an actress.[9][10] Her portrayal of a sex worker in Chameli (2004) proved to be the turning point in her career[11] and she was later noted for her performances in the critically acclaimed Dev (2004) and Omkara (2006).
In 2007, kareena kapoor received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in Jab We Met, a romantic comedy directed by Imtiaz Ali. She went on to play the lead female role in the thriller Kurbaan (2009), for which she earned critical acclaim, and the drama 3 Idiots (2009), which became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.[12] Having done so, kareena kapoor has established herself as a leading actress of the Hindi film industry.[5][10] In addition to movie acting, kareena kapoor is a regular stage performer and has launched her own clothing line in association with being the brand ambassador for the retail chain Globus. Her off-screen life, including her relationship with actor Saif Ali Khan, is the subject of wide media coverage in India.
Born in Mumbai, India, on September 21, 1980, into the kareena kapoor film family, kareena kapoor is the youngest daughter of actors Randhir kapoor and Babita (née Shivdasani); her elder sister Karisma kapoor, is also an actress. She is the granddaughter of actor and filmmaker Raj kareena kapoor, great-granddaughter of actor Prithviraj kareena kapoor, and niece of actor Rishi kareena kapoor.[1] According to kareena kapoor, the name "Kareena" was derived from the book Anna Karenina, which her mother read while she was pregnant with her.[14] Often informally referred to as Bebo,[2][3] she is of Punjabi Khatri descent from her father's side,[15] and on her mother's side she is Sindhi.[16]
As a child, she had strong aspirations to become an actress, and was particularly inspired by watching the films of Bollywood actresses Nargis and Meena Kumari.[17] kareena kapoor, who describes herself as a "very naughty [and] spoilt child", would regularly dress up in her mother's clothes and perform in front of the mirror.[18] Despite her family background, her father disapproved of women entering the acting profession because he believed it conflicted with the traditional maternal duties and responsibility of women in the family.[19] This led to a conflict between her parents and resulted in kareena kapoor's mother leaving the house with her two daughters.[20] After her parents' separation, she was raised in Lokhandwala by her mother, who worked several jobs to support her daughters until Karisma debuted as an actress in 1991.[21] In an interview with Vir Sanghvi, kareena kapoor said that growing up in a household filled with women helped her become strong and independent.[18] Following her parents' reconciliation in October 2007,[20] kareena kapoor explained that they "were never officially divorced ... [but] ... liv[ed] separately."[21] Asked about the relationship she shared with her father, kareena kapoor remarked, "My father is ... an important factor in my life. [Al]though we did not see him often in our initial years, we are a family now."[21]
kareena kapoor attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai before progressing to Welham Girls Boarding School in Dehradun.[17] She later recalled, "I learnt so much from being at Welham", and described her experience there as "one of the finest parts of my life".[18] According to kareena kapoor, she was a good student and received first-class honours in all subjects except mathematics.[18] Upon graduating from the boarding school, she studied commerce for two years at Mithibai College in Vile Parle, Mumbai, but later confessed that she only studied there because she was close to her family.[17] kareena kapoor then registered for a three-month summer course in microcomputers at Harvard University in the United States.[17] She later developed an interest in law and enrolled at the Government Law College in Churchgate; during this period she became immersed in law books and developed a long-lasting passion for reading.[17] However, after completing one year at Churchgate, kareena kapoor realized that she was not inclined towards academics and returned to her initial plan to become an actress.[18][22] She began training at an acting institute in Andheri, mentored by Kishore Namit kareena kapoor, a member of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII)
kareena kapoor was initially scheduled to make her debut in Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), opposite the director's son Hrithik Roshan.[17] Several days into the filming, however, she abandoned the project and later explained that, "it was probably destined that I was not to be in the film. After all, it was a launch for his son. The whole focus was on the boy. Now I am glad I did not do the movie."[17]
She made her debut later that year in J.P. Dutta's war drama Refugee, alongside Abhishek Bachchan. Set during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, the film centers on a man known simply as "Refugee", who illegally transports civilians back and forth across the Indo-Pakistani border. kareena kapoor portrayed Naaz, a Bangladeshi girl who falls in love with Refugee while illegally migrating to Pakistan with her family. Her performance was acclaimed by critics; Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama wrote that kareena kapoor "has a magnetic personality, which will make the viewer fall in love with her instantly. What surprises you is the ease with which she emotes the most difficult of scenes [...] There is no denying the fact that she is a natural performer who is very camera friendly."[24] On the experience of making her first film, she described it as "...tough ... [but] also a great learning experience."[17] Refugee became the fifth highest-grossing film in India in 2000,[25] and kareena kapoor's performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[4]
In 2001, kareena kapoor appeared opposite Tusshar kareena kapoor in the romantic drama Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, which became one of the highest earners of the year.[26] A review in The Hindu, in regards to her performance, noted that she was "definitely the actress to watch out for, if her debut with Abhishek in Refugee and now Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai are any indication [...] Kareena shines throughout the flick, with the grace of a seasoned sizzler already."[27] kareena kapoor next starred in Subhash Ghai's family drama Yaadein alongside Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan. The drama centers on the character of Raj Singh Puri, a middle-class man, and his daughters' marriages. kareena kapoor played the part of the youngest daughter and Roshan's love interest, Isha Singh Puri. The film was met with negative reactions from reviewers and garnered poor box office returns.[26] kareena kapoor then appeared in the Abbas-Mustan thriller Ajnabee. The feature was adapted from the 1992 American thriller film Consenting Adults,[28] and was a moderate box office success in India.[26]
Later in the year, she starred in Santosh Sivan's period epic Asoka, a partly fictionalized account of the life of Ashoka the Great. It was widely screened across the United Kingdom and North America, and was also selected for screening at the Venice Film Festival and the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival.[29] Featured opposite Shahrukh Khan who played Ashoka, kareena kapoor portrayed the character of Kaurwaki, a princess of Kalinga with whom Ashoka falls in love, and received her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination.[4] While the film received generally positive reviews, kareena kapoor's performance received a mixed reaction from critics. Rediff.com concluded that "while a large portion of the first half is focused on the emerging romance between the runaway prince and herself and to their credit they do manage to whip up some on-screen chemistry, I am still unsure as to her acting abilities."[30] Meanwhile, David Rooney from Variety wrote, "kareena kapoor plays ornately tattooed Kaurwaki as a lively mix of flirtatious coquette and feisty warrior woman, kind of like J.Lo meets Michelle Yeoh."[31]
kareena kapoor's final release of 2001 was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..., a melodrama, in which she was featured as part of an ensemble cast that included Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan. Directed by Karan Johar, the movie was a significant financial and critical success and became India's second highest-grossing film of the year, as well as kareena kapoor's highest-grossing movie up until then. It also performed well internationally and became the biggest Bollywood success of all time in the overseas market up until then, earning over Indian rupee1,000 million (US$ 22.7 million) worldwide.[32] kareena kapoor's performance as "Poo", a good-natured but superficial girl, was described as "one of the main ... highlights of the film",[33] and her portrayal earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress nomination.[4]
During 2002 and 2003, kareena kapoor experienced a setback in her career. She was in six films—Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, Jeena Sirf Merre Liye, Talaash: The Hunt Begins..., Khushi, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, and the four-hour war epic LOC Kargil—all of which proved critically and commercially unsuccessful in India.[34][35] kareena kapoor's performances were often identified by critics as unoriginal and repetitive, with little inspiration.[1] They expressed concern that she was becoming typecast, but these negative reviews were fundamental in motivating her to improve her integrity as an actress in subsequent years by accepting more demanding roles
Following the negative period in kareena kapoor's career, 2004 marked the beginning of her work in more serious films, most of which would bring her critical acclaim rather than commercial success.[8] Under the direction of Sudhir Mishra, kareena kapoor portrayed the role of a prostitute in Chameli. The film relates the story of a young prostitute who meets with a widowed investment banker (played by Rahul Bose), and follows the development of their relationship as they share their devastating life experiences. When kareena kapoor was initially offered the role in 2002, she refused it, stating that she was reluctant to play a bold role at the beginning of her career.[36] However, when the director again approached her a year later, she agreed to do the film and viewed it as an opportunity to show the range of her acting skills.[36] To prepare for the role, she visited several of Mumbai's red-light district areas at night to study the dress and mannerisms of sex workers.[36] Chameli received predominantly positive reviews upon release and kareena kapoor's performance was generally well-received by critics, with the Indiatimes praising her "intuitive brilliance" and stating that she had exceeded all expectations.[37] Another reviewer, however expressed concern that they found her portrayal unconvincing and excessively stereotypical, describing her as "sounding more like a teenager playacting than a brash, hardened streetwalker", and likening her mannerisms to that of a caricature.[38] Nonetheless, kareena kapoor's portrayal of Chameli garnered her the Filmfare Special Performance Award[4] and the film marked a significant turning point in her career as an actress.[8][11]
She next co-starred in Mani Ratnam's bilingual project Yuva alongside Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Rani Mukerji and Esha Deol. The film, consisting of three chapters, tells the story of six individuals linked by a car accident. kareena kapoor is featured in the third chapter as Oberoi's love interest, Mira, a young witty woman. She was mostly criticised for taking a role of minimal importance, though her performance was generally well-received.[39] Subhash K Jha described her role as "fey and insubstantial", but further stated that "she turns these character traits to her own advantage to create a girl who is at once enigmatic and all-there, a bit like the film itself which is both mysterious and voluptuous".[40] She then appeared alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Fardeen Khan in Govind Nihalani's critically acclaimed film Dev, which revolved around the 2002 Hindu-Muslim riots in the Indian state of Gujarat.[41] kareena kapoor's role was that of a Muslim victim named Aaliya, modelled after Zaheera Sheikh, a key witness in Vadodara's Best Bakery case.[41] It earned her a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance, as well as nominations for Best Actress at various award ceremonies.[4] Taran Adarsh commented, "Kareena kareena kapoor is first-rate. Sporting a deglamorized look, the actress takes a giant leap with this film. Her scene with Amitabh Bachchan (when the latter asks for witnesses to come forward) is an example of superb acting."[42]
Shortly afterwards, she was cast for the first time as a villain in the thriller Fida. The film follows the story of an on-line robbery and the Mumbai underworld with which her character Neha Mehra becomes involved. During the filming of Fida, kareena kapoor entered into a relationship with actor Shahid kareena kapoor, whom she later described as having "a major positive influence in my life."[43] Although the film did not succeed at the box office,[44] kareena kapoor garnered positive reviews for her performance, with some critics noting a distinct progression from her earlier roles.[45] Her subsequent releases that year included Abbas-Mustan's moderately successful thriller Aitraaz and Priyadarshan's comedy Hulchul, her first box office success since 2002.[44]
In 2005, she starred as the protagonist in Bewafaa, a drama directed by Dharmesh Darshan. The feature received mostly negative reviews and kareena kapoor's portrayal of Anjali Sahai, an unfaithful woman, was not well-received.[46] Nikhat Kazmi of Indiatimes believed that in an effort to become a serious actress, kareena kapoor was embodying a maturer, more jaded character ahead of her years in Bewafaa which appeared peculiar for a young woman of her age.[46] Later that year, she appeared in Priyadarshan's romantic drama Kyon Ki, which was set in a psychiatric hospital, and relates the love story of a mentally ill patient, played by Salman Khan, and his physician, played by kareena kapoor. The film was a box office failure,[47] though kareena kapoor's performance was generally enjoyed by critics, with the BBC reporting, "It goes without saying that she is a pure natural when it comes to acting."[48] kareena kapoor then was cast in the romance Dosti: Friends Forever. While not a success in India, the film became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2005 in the United Kingdom.[49]
"Kareena is an apt Desdemona to Ajay Devgn's Othello. As young Dolly who elopes with a man she is madly in love with and ultimately becomes a victim of his violent jealousy, Kareena is brilliant. Her vulnerability is palpable, her expression of love endearing [...] Kareena internalises her character with stupefying intelligence and throws up a performance that leaves you overwhelmed. And she makes it look so effortless."
—Filmfare on kareena kapoor's performance in Omkara (2006)[50]
In 2006, kareena kapoor appeared in three films. She first starred in the thriller 36 China Town followed by the comedy Chup Chup Ke; both films performed reasonably well.[51] She next portrayed the Shakespearean character of Desdemona in Omkara, the Hindi adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film is a tragedy of sexual jealousy set against the backdrop of the political system in Uttar Pradesh.[52] The film premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and was also selected for screening at the Cairo International Film Festival.[52][53] Omkara was embraced by critics and kareena kapoor's portrayal earned her a fourth Filmfare Award and first Star Screen Award;[4] her performance was later included in the 2010 issue of the "Top 80 Iconic Performances" by Filmfare.[50] kareena kapoor herself considers her role in Omkara as a "new benchmark" in her career and has made comparisons between her portrayal of Dolly and her own evolving maturity as a woman.[54]
Following Omkara, she stopped acting for a short time, as she felt that "nothing [was] challenging enough for me to say yes".[54] In an interview with The Times of India, kareena kapoor commented, "In my initial years in the industry, I pushed myself to do a lot of work because I was greedy. I did some films – which I now regret – purely for the money. Today, I want to do selective films."[55] She later described this period as a way to "relax and unwind" herself.

kareena kapoor returned to film as the female protagonist Geet Dhillon, a vivacious Sikh girl with a strong zest for life, in the Imtiaz Ali directed romantic comedy Jab We Met (2007). Featured opposite Shahid kareena kapoor, the film relates the story of two people with contrasting personalities who meet on a train and eventually fall in love. The film was received favourably by critics and became one of the year's most successful films, with a domestic box office of Indian rupee303 million (US$ 6.88 million).[57] She won several awards for her performance, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and her second Star Screen Award for Best Actress.[4] Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN noted, "Uninhibited and spontaneous, Kareena kareena kapoor is the soul of this picture, its biggest strength, as she brings alive her character with not just those smart lines, but with the kind of candor actors seldom invest in their work."[58] While shooting for Jab We Met, kareena kapoor and Shahid ended their three-year relationship.[59] Asked in Mumbai Mirror about their well-publicized break-up, she stated that "I hold him in utmost regard, and I hope one day we could be good friends. He is a great guy."[21] During this period, speculation began to surface that she was dating actor Saif Ali Khan, her co-star in the film Tashan (2008).[59] On October 18, 2007, during Manish Malhotra's grand finale show at the Lakme Fashion Week, Khan confirmed their relationship to the media.[

In 2008, she co-starred alongside Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and Anil kapoor in Vijay Krishna Acharya's action-thriller Tashan. Though a poll conducted by Bollywood Hungama named it as the most anticipated release of the year,[60] the film eventually became a commercial and critical failure.[61][62] She next provided her voice for the character of Laila, the love interest of a street dog named Romeo, in the Yash Raj Films and Walt Disney Pictures animated film Roadside Romeo. It was the second Bollywood film to receive a North American release by a Hollywood studio.[63] In preparation for the role, kareena kapoor viewed several Hollywood animated films to analyse how actors delivered their dialogues.[64] kareena kapoor then appeared in Rohit Shetty's comedy Golmaal Returns, the sequel to the 2006 film Golmaal. A part of an ensemble cast that included Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi and Tusshar kareena kapoor, kareena kapoor played a distrustful wife who believed her husband to be unfaithful. The film received ambivalent reception from critics and kareena kapoor herself received mixed reviews. The Indian Express believed the screenplay was unoriginal, concluding, "There is nothing particularly new about a suspicious wife keeping tabs on her husband, and there is nothing particularly new in the way Kareena plays it."[65] Golmaal Returns was nonetheless a major financial success, with revenues of Indian rupee793 million (US$ 18 million) internationally.[32]
In 2009, kareena kapoor was cast as Simrita Rai opposite Akshay Kumar in Sabbir Khan's battle of the sexes comedy Kambakkht Ishq. Set in Los Angeles, California, it became the first Indian film in history to be shot within Universal Studios Hollywood, California, and featured several cameo appearances from Hollywood actors.[66] The film earned over Indian rupee840 million (US$ 19.07 million) worldwide, but was a critical failure.[32] The Times of India described her performance as "a complete let-down" and further stated that "despite her haute-coutured look, her micro minis, her pencil heels, she comes across as a completely unconvincing supermodel cum surgeon."[67] She next starred in Prem Soni's directorial debut, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna. kareena kapoor featured as the protagonist, Raina Khanna, a woman who becomes the sole breadwinner of the family, and therefore struggles with her marriage. The film was critically and financially unsuccessful,[68] with the Daily News and Analysis concluding that "kareena kapoor shows moments of the talent we associate with her, but then slumps with a silly drunken scene or by just smiling beatifically through emotional moments."[69]
Following Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, kareena kapoor's next release was Kurbaan, a dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of global terrorism.[70] It was directed by Rensil D'Silva and written by Karan Johar, co-starring Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Om Puri and Kirron Kher. kareena kapoor played the role of Avantika Ahuja, a woman who is confined to house arrest after finding out that her husband is a terrorist. She described the film as "an emotionally draining experience", which did not let her disconnect from her character during shooting.[70] Upon release, the film was critically embraced and kareena kapoor received her fourth Filmfare Best Actress nomination.[4] According to Subhash K Jha, "Kurbaan belongs to Kareena kareena kapoor. In her most consistently-pitched performance to date she pulls out all stops to play a betrayed wife with splendid sensitivity. Kareena accommodates her radiant beauty into an utterly credible character and performance. At her best, Kareena is incomparable. She proves it in Kurbaan."[71]
Her final release of 2009 was Rajkumar Hirani's drama 3 Idiots, a film loosely based on the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.[72] Co-starring alongside Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, kareena kapoor starred as Pia, an independent-minded medical student and Khan's love interest. On acting alongside Khan, kareena kapoor revealed that it was "a dream come true" and further stated that her journey as an actress was "finally complete".[73] The feature was a major financial and critical success and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time, with a domestic revenue of Indian rupee2,026 million (US$ 45.99 million).[12] It also did well internationally and grossed over Indian rupee690 million (US$ 15.66 million), the second biggest Bollywood success of all time in the overseas market.[7][74] Rediff.com opined that kareena kapoor dazzled with her "brief role, and even though a lot of her spunk seems significantly Jab We Met in tone, she lights up the screen when she is around."[75] During the 55th Filmfare Awards, kareena kapoor received another Best Actress nomination for her role.[4]
The following year, she appeared in the romantic comedy Milenge Milenge, a production that had been delayed since 2005.[76] The feature garnered negative reviews and poor box office returns. kareena kapoor's role was small and was not well-received.[76] She next featured alongside Kajol and Arjun Rampal in We Are Family, the Hindi adaptation of the 1998 Hollywood release Stepmom.[77] Prior on commencing work for the project, kareena kapoor explained that she did not want to watch Stepmom in an attempt to "interpret the role...in my own style".[77] Reaction to the film was mostly lukewarm, but kareena kapoor's performance drew positive reviews; critic Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama wrote: "Kareena excels yet again and her sequences with the kids are a delight. In fact, casting Kareena as the stepmom is just right, since she is the only actor who can stand up to Kajol in high-voltage scenes and that is because Kareena is a powerful actor herself."[78] At the same time, The New York Times noted that "kareena kapoor [...] manages to make something of a role that often beggars belief."[79]
By June 2010, kareena kapoor completed filming for Rohit Shetty's comedy Golmaal 3, the sequel to the 2008 film Golmaal Returns.[80] She was cast as the lead in Anubhav Sinha's science fiction Ra.One and Sriram Raghavan's action-thriller Agent Vinod.[80]
In August 2007, kareena kapoor replaced actress Soha Ali Khan, when she was hired as the brand ambassador for the clothing chain Globus on a two-year contract.[95] Vinay Nadkarni, CEO of Globus Stores Pvt Ltd, explained that in an attempt to move away from being a multi-branded retail chain to adopting a single brand strategy for its stores, the clothing chain decided to appoint a different brand ambassador for its new business ventures.[96] On being appointed by Globus, kareena kapoor commented, "I am delighted to be the face of Globus [...] I look forward to spreading this new language of fashion across the nation".[95] Since her start, it was reported that the brand had experienced a 75 percent increase in sales.[97]
In February 2008, kareena kapoor announced that she would be launching her own line of clothing, thus becoming the first Indian actress to do so.[98] She said, "I will be launching my exclusive line of clothes soon and I am quite sure people will like it. My clothing line is very reflective of my personal sense of style and will have my label on it. Just like I am pretty casual about my dressing, my line will also consist of an extremely wearable yet stylish collection. I am taking out this line in association with Globus, a brand that I am also the ambassadress for".[98] kareena kapoor further stated that she would also be involved in the planning and designing process of the clothing as well.[98] Her clothing line debuted several months later in stores across India and was well-received by the public.[99]
Following the end of her contract with Globus, kareena kapoor expressed her desire of working with an international design house from the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in France, to release her clothing line internationally.[100] In January 2010, she explained that "I have the plans in place [and] I just have to execute them".[101] However, kareena kapoor later noted that due to her prior commitments, her "plans [...] have had to take a backseat"
Hailing from a family deeply involved in the Bollywood film industry, kareena kapoor faced the media spotlight from a very young age despite not making her acting debut until 2000.[17] As a child, kareena kapoor regularly attended award ceremonies and events with her mother Babita and sister Karisma kareena kapoor, and would also accompany her sister on set during filming.[3] In an interview with Filmfare, she said that growing up in a film family helped her develop a sense of professionalism towards her work and remain grounded as a human being.[103] kareena kapoor's off-screen life has been subject to wide media coverage in India with frequent press coverage of her weight and diet.[9] She also created headlines with her much publicized breakup with Shahid kareena kapoor and her subsequent relationship with actor Saif Ali Khan.[59] Often referred to as India's "Brangelina" ("Saifeena") by the press,[104] her relationship with Khan has become one of the most reported celebrity stories in India since 2007.[9][13] In recent years, in response to media speculation, kareena kapoor has developed a nonchalant relationship with the media and has gained a reputation for discussing her professional or private life with the press with no reservations.[6][9]
As one of her most distinctive physical features, kareena kapoor's lips have been cited by the Indian media as her trademark.[105] Her off-screen image has been open to much debate and criticism. While a section of the press has described her as friendly and extremely close to her family,[3] others have described her as arrogant and vain, an image she gained following the portrayal of her character "Poo" in the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001).[106] She subsequently went on to play similar type of characters in her films from 2002–03, which further established her off-screen as well as her on-screen image as an actress.[1] Prior to the release of her 2004 film, Chameli, in which she played the role of a sex worker, kareena kapoor stated that, "there is a certain image that people identify you with. It always follows you whichever role you play. I am trying to transgress this image and become more screen-friendly than image-friendly."[107] Following the release of Chameli, which helped her gain a new on-screen image,[8] kareena kapoor was asked about her off-screen image. During an interview, she explained that as a child she was always taught to be self-confident, a trait she says was often misunderstood by the media for her arrogance
In 2004, kareena kapoor appeared third on Rediff's list of "Top Bollywood Female Stars".[109] She was later ranked seventh and fifth in 2005–2006 respectively, and came back to the third position in 2007.[110][111][112] She has been featured frequently on other Rediff lists, including "Bollywood's Most Beautiful Actresses",[105] "Bollywood's Best Dressed Women"[113] and "Women of Many Faces".[114] During 2005, kareena kapoor made her first appearance on Karan Johar's talk show Koffee with Karan alongside Rani Mukerji,[115] whilst she later appeared along with Shahid kareena kapoor and her sister Karisma in 2007.[43] In 2006, she was chosen to model and walk the runway for Manish Malhotra's fashion display at the Fashion Week 2006, along with actors Shahid kareena kapoor and Urmila Matondkar.[116] Three years later, kareena kapoor once again walked the runway for Malhotra's bridal collection titled Destination Wedding during the 2009 India Couture Week.[117]
Today, kareena kapoor is considered as one of the most popular Bollywood celebrities in India.[118][119] Her look and performances have established her as a style icon for young girls and women.[19][120] In a 2009 poll conducted by the newspaper DNA, she was voted as one of India's most popular icons.[121] According to the UK magazine Eastern Eye, kareena kapoor was ranked fourth in the list of "Asia's Sexiest Women" in 2009;[122] she had been previously ranked eighth in 2007 and third in 2008.[123][124] She became the only actress to be featured on CNNGo's list of "Who Mattered Most in India"[125] and was described as "India's Most Beautiful Woman" by People in 2010.[126] In July 2010, kareena kapoor was placed eighth in Filmfare Magazine's annual power list, an achievement she repeated from the previous year, where she was ranked at number ten.[127]

Katrina Kaif (Kashmiri: क़त्रीना कैफ़ (Devanagari)) (born 16 July 1984) is an actress and former model who appears in Indian films, mainly in the Hindi-language film industry.[1][2] She has also appeared in Telugu, and Malayalam films.
Kaif was born in Hong Kong[3] to an Indian Kashmiri father,[4][5][6] Mohammed Kaif, and an English mother, Suzanne Turquotte,[7] both of whom are British citizens. Her parents divorced when she was very young. Kaif has seven siblings. She was raised in Hawaii and later moved to her mother's home country, England.
Kaif began her modeling career at the age fourteen; her first job was for a jewelry campaign. She continued modeling in London under a contract with the Models 1 Agency and did campaigns for houses such as La Senza and Arcadius, and even walked on the London Fashion Week.[3]
Kaif's London modeling-work led to her discovery by London-based filmmaker Kaizad Gustad, who gave her a part in his film Boom (2003). She moved to Mumbai and was offered a number of modeling assignments. However, filmmakers were initially hesitant to sign her because she could not speak Hindi.[8][9]
Kaif saw moderate success with the 2005 film Sarkar, where she played the bit part of Abhishek Bachchan's girlfriend, and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005), where she was paired opposite Salman Khan.
In 2007, Kaif appeared in her first major hit movie, Namastey London, wherein she starred as a British Indian girl alongside Akshay Kumar for the second time after the box office letdown Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006). Her run of hit films continued with Apne, Partner, and Welcome.[10]
In 2008, she played the villain role for the first time in Abbas-Mustan's hit action thriller Race. She played the role of Saif Ali Khan's secretary who is secretly in love with his hostile stepbrother (played by Akshay Khanna). Kaif's second release of the year was Anees Bazmee's production Singh Is Kinng, opposite Akshay Kumar. The film was a big success at the box office. Kaif's final release of the year, Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj, was a commercial failure,[11] but its script has made its way into the Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for artistic merits, original screenplay with a substance, and the film as a whole.[12][13]
Kaif's first release for 2009, New York, with John Abraham, was a critical and commercial success.[14] Kaif's performance was highly regarded. Wrote critic Taran Adarsh, "Katrina gives you the biggest surprise. Known for her glamour roles, Katrina proves that she can deliver if the director and writer offer her a role of substance. She's outstanding. In fact, people will see a new, different Katrina this time."[15]
She next played a bit role as a biker chick in the multi-starrer action film Blue, popularly known as India's first underwater thriller,[16] which performed decently at the box office.[17] The film was not successful.
At the year's end, she appeared in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, with Ranbir Kapoor, and De Dana Dan with Akshay Kumar. Both films were commercial successes.
Kaif's first film of 2010 was Raajneeti, where she appeared opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The film did extremely well at the box office, receiving a blockbuster status.[18] She is currently filming Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan with Akshay Kumar. The film is set to be released on 24 December 2010.[19] Her popularity led her to be named as one of Bollywood's six top actresses in a September 2010 article, alongside actresses Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone and Kangna Ranaut.[20]
Voice
It should be noted that due to her poor knowledge of Hindi (and other Indian languages), Katrina Kaif's voice has often been dubbed over by another actress for many of her early films. With the exception of De Dana Dan, all her films since New York feature her real voice. Earlier films in which her real voice is also heard are Singh Is Kinng, Namastey London and Boom.

Priyanka Chopra (Hindi: प्रियंका चोपड़ा; born 18 July 1982)[1] is an Indian actress and former Miss World. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model and gained fame after winning the Miss World title in 2000.[2]
Chopra made her acting debut with the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan. The following year, she made her Bollywood film debut with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy and followed it with the hit Andaaz, for which she won a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. In 2004, she became the second woman to win the Filmfare Best Villain Award, which she received for her critically acclaimed performance in Aitraaz. Chopra would later have commercial success with films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Krrish (2006) and Don - The Chase Begins Again.[3] Chopra earned a Filmfare Best Actress Award and a National Film Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a model in Fashion (2008) and has thus established herself as one of the leading contemporary actresses in Bollywood.
Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to Ashok Chopra and Madhu Akhauri, both physicians by profession. Chopra spent her childhood in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh; Newton, Massachusetts; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.[6] Her father was in the army and thus her family moved quite frequently. Her father hailed from a family of Punjabi origin, settled in Bareilly and her mother comes from a family, settled in Jamshedpur. She also has a brother, Siddharth, who is seven years younger than she is.[7]
Chopra studied at La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow as a young girl. These frequent re-locations took place as her father was a physician in the Indian Army. She subsequently re-located to the U.S. where she studied in Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts and then in John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She returned to India and did her high school at Army School in Bareilly. She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai but left after winning the Miss World pageant.
Chopra came in second place at Femina Miss India 2000 competition winning the Femina Miss India World title and subsequently being sent to Miss World where she was crowned Miss World 2000.[8] In the same year, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza, both also from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns respectively, in a rare triple victory for one country.
When Chopra won the Miss World crown, she became the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and the fourth Indian woman to win in a span of seven years.
On December 12, 2009, Chopra was present as a judge for the Miss World 2009 competition held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Chopra made her debut in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan playing the role of Priya, the love interest of the protaginist in the film played by Vijay. The film was praised for its wit, although the depth of Chopra's character was seen as lacking.[9] Chopra also sang playback in the film, singing "Ullathai Killadhe" along with Vijay.
In 2003, she appeared in her first Bollywood film, opposite Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the Anil Sharma film The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. She played a supporting role as a doctor named Shaheen in a film The New York Times described as "ripping its text from the seething border tensions between India and Pakistan, spicing its conflict with hot-tempered religious zealots bent on nuclear havoc".[10] Despite being one of the highest grossing films of that year, the overall film was not well received by critics,[11] Chopra was awarded mostly good reviews for her debut Hindi performance.[12] Later that year she appeared in Raj Kanwar's Andaaz, playing the character of Jiya who falls in love with Raj Malhotra, played by Akshay Kumar. The film was a considerable box office success,[11] earning her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Rediff.com said of her role, "Priyanka clicks with the audience thanks to her skimpy outfits".[13]
Her next few films released in 2004 like Plan, Kismat and Asambhav performed poorly at the box office.[14] Later that year she appeared in David Dhawan's romantic comedy Mujhse Shaadi Karogi playing the role of a young fashion designer Rani along with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, the film turned out to be the third highest grossing film of that year.[15] She next starred in Aitraaz. It was her first negative role. Her performance won critical acclaim[16] and earned a Filmfare Best Villain Award. She also received a second nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the role. In the same year, she participated in a world tour titled Temptations 2004 with other Bollywood actors, including Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal.
In 2005, she starred in Blackmail, Karam, Waqt: The Race Against Time, Yakeen, Barsaat and Bluffmaster, none of which performed well at the box office.[14] In 2006, Chopra starred in two of the most successful films of the year - Krrish and Don - The Chase Begins Again.[17] Then in 2007 she starred in Nikhil Advani's ensemble piece, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love. The movie failed to do well at the box office.[18] Chopra's next release, Big Brother also underperformed.
In 2008, Chopra featured in six films. Her first four films, Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku and Drona, failed to do well.[19] Chopra's fifth release of the year, Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion was a critical success. The film revolved around the fashion world and Chopra's role was that of an ambitious model. Her performance in the film was appreciated and earned her several awards for Best Actress including the National Film Award for Best Actress and also the Filmfare Best Actress Award.[20] Music India Online said of her performance, "Her transformation from the bubbly Chandigarh girl to the super-ambitious supermodel, who dumps her boyfriend and conscience to pursue her dreams, is achieved with a gentle subtlety and bridled passion. This is Priyanka’s coming-of-age film. She looks like a zillion bucks. And acts like a woman who connects with the darkest, most desperate human emotions without wallowing in them."[21] Chopra's final release of the year was Tarun Mansukhani's romantic comedy Dostana. The film was a moderate financial success.[19][22]
In 2009 she appeared in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminey alongside Shahid Kapoor playing a marathi girl named Sweety. Her performance in the film was described by critic Taran Adarsh: "Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect".[23]
She subsequently appeared in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee?, a film in which Chopra became the first actress in the world to portray 12 distinct characters on screen.[24] She is being considered for inclusion in an upcoming edition of Guinness World Records for this feat.[25] The film itself, however, was a financial and critical failure.[26][27]
In 2010, Chopra appeared in Jugal Hansraj's Pyaar Impossible where she portrayed the role of a college beauty who eventually falls in love with a geek. Her next release, Siddharth Anand's Anjaana Anjaani opposite Ranbir Kapoor, got a good response at the box office, but was not well received by the critics. Chopra has completed working on Vishal Bhardwaj's Saat Khoon Maaf and has commenced filming for Farhan Akhtar's Don 2 - The Chase Continues alongside Shahrukh Khan in Berlin. She has also been finalized for Anurag Basu's Silence alongside Ranbir Kapoor.
She was also appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2010.
Chopra made her television debut as a host with Colors' reality show Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi Level 3. She replaced actor Akshay Kumar who hosted the previous two seasons. The show, which premiered on September 6, 2010, beat the opening ratings of the previous two seasons
